University throws up a lot of challenges at students, particularly the challenge to be responsible for using their time well. It is common for students to lose themselves in all the excitement of being at university, only to realize too late how much time they’ve allowed to slip by. Here is a simple strategy that can help you manage time effectively at university.
1. Start from day one
Students are at their highest motivation level on the first day of university. Use this enthusiasm to go over your course schedules and create a study plan for the semester. Make sure to set time apart for unexpected assignments, illness, and holidays.
2. Plan thoroughly
This plan has to be detailed enough to enable you to be prepared for all upcoming tests, assignments, quizzes and projects a week in advance. Once you’ve made your plan, stick to it religiously. Allowing yourself to slip up once may not seem like a great deal but it can delude you into thinking you can continue to take similar risks.
3. Make technology your friend
Often times, university students are unable to manage their time well because of distracting technology. Smartphones and other gadgets offer leisure at the fingertips, which can seem very rewarding when compared with the stress of studying. However, you can use technology as your study pal. Download apps that help you keep track of your study progress. There are apps that help you take notes as you read material online. Set calendar dates, to-do lists, and reminders on your phone to get notified about upcoming deadlines.
4. Avoid procrastination
Procrastination is a common habit among university students and one that must be avoided. Life is unpredictable so you must always allocate time responsibly. A simple tip for getting into the habit of doing things right now is to draw up a list of all your tasks. Identify the most difficult ones and do them first.
5. Choose the right place
Find a place where you can work without distractions. Remember that people procrastinate because they exaggerate the amount of effort required in doing a task. Be alert to such tendencies and assure yourself that every task is manageable if you get started immediately.
Everybody needs a break from studying. Use the time between assignments to develop a healthy mind and body. Work out on the treadmill or take a walk in the park. The exercise will help you solidify what you’ve learnt and allow you to reflect on it.
